...4th International
Scritti Politti
Conference

(actually, it's just a glorified trip down at the pub/bar)

DATE: 7 August 1999
(Saturday)
TIME: 7:00 pm
(British Summer Time)
PLACE: London, UK

Ego
23-24 Bateman Street
Soho
London W1
TEL: 0171 437 1977

How to get there (by Tube)...
Tottenham Cour Road station
(Northern or Central lines)
Leicester Square station
(Northern or Piccadilly lines)

see MAP @ www.streetmap.co.uk...
Bateman street is in center square, where the word 'MARQUEE' is - one block north of Old Compton Street, crossing Frith Street. Ego is at the corner of Bateman & Greet Streets.

NOTE:

Dress smart casual, but no need for designer gears - Ego claimed it's not a snobbish estalishment.

Spaces for 25 people have been reserved and the Attendees list below given to Ego management. But because the spaces are not in a separate room, more people are welcome to come along. At 7pm, there won't be a doorman, so there shouldn't be any problem of anyone not getting in.

Ego will allow us to play some Scritti music if we provide it on minidisc or CD and up until their own DJ comes in at 10pm. James Lawrence has volunteered to assemble a compilation on minidisc for the occassion. So we'll likely be playing both new and old songs.

Description of Ego
in Timeout Guide:

Occupying the site of former trendy hangout Riki-Tik's (which was most famous for turning away Quentin Tarantino because he was wearing a suit), the terribly named Ego is, surprisingly, a much nicer and far more relaxed place.

The design is simple, with white walls and red sofas and chairs, and the youngish crowd is neither achingly fashionable nor pretentious. The music playing on our visit indicates that Ego does not take itself too seriously - Hot Chocolate's You Sexy Thin and other disco classics - and the very keen French boys who run the place are quite charming.

The ground-floor bar is small, with clear glass windows looking out over the street, while downstairs is large and more cavernous. Simple, fresh bar snacks include mixed leaf salad with Parmesan, or smoked ham and Swiss cheese sandwich (both £4) and hamburger (£8). Grolsch and Staropramen are both £2.80.
