Jinx (online magazine) & Lego


An important aspect of being a good HTML coder is the ability to work with different project goals. The success of some projects depend on great looking pages. This frequently involves lots of graphics and/or precise and complicated layouts. In these cases, clean and efficient coding is of paramount importance in helping the pages load as quickly as possible.


Both Jinx and Lego fall into this category. To achieve the slick looks intended by the designers (see screen shots below), frames and complex nested tables were heavily used, as pixel-precise technology of layers and DHTML was either unavailable or not widely adopted yet.


Part of my tasks in these projects were to

  • advise on the most efficient application of this table-dependent coding
  • troubleshoot when elements do not align properly because of browser rendering quarks, which are affected by such things as line breaks in the HTML code
